BIDS works as an accelerator of impact, co-creating solutions with communities and leveraging the strengths of local culture and context. We build productive relationships among stakeholders to enable sustainable change in remote and underserved places.

Our projects reach the poor and underdeveloped sections of society in Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram and the Barak Valley of Assam — through awareness, capacity building, skills development, and collaboration.

Small Grant Program (SGP) India

The OP-7 phase of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme in India (SGP India) enables communities and organisations in some of the most vulnerable and least developed areas to enhance their socio-ecological resilience, focusing on collective action through participatory landscape planning. SGP India is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) as the National Host Institution. In Mawlai C&RD Block, BIDS has used the programme to broker 100 formal ten-year land lease agreements between tenant farmers and landowners, and to support 372 vermi-beds across 318 households. In all, 1,624.44 hectares are now under sustainable practice — 106.2% of the programme's target — and farmers producing vermi-compost have a guaranteed first buyer: BIDS itself purchases back both the composting worms and the finished manure.

Kpersoh

Kpersoh

Kpersoh, under NABARD's Tribal Development Fund, has worked with 200 tribal households in Laskein Block, West Jaintia Hills District, on the WADI horticulture model — combining horticulture with intercropping to build a long-term, climate-resilient income source. The project has led to the formation of the Kpersoh Agri-Horti Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd., a Farmer Producer Organisation now constituted and operating, with training in post-harvest handling, organic methods, marketing and value addition including jam and juice. Farmers here are also part of a wider spice value chain: through Integrated Village Cooperative Societies promoted under Meghalaya LAMP by the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA), raw Lakadong turmeric is collected, processed and marketed in bulk. BIDS, through its RRTC, has partnered with Northeastern Hill University (NEHU) and MBMA to set up a processing unit at Laskein producing oleoresin and turmeric oil for export to the Netherlands and Germany — a project that is still ongoing.

National Rural Livelihoods Mission - NRLM

The National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), implemented with the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihood Society in the Mawlai and Mawpat blocks of East Khasi Hills district, reduces rural poverty by organising women into self-help groups and linking them to financial and livelihood services. In 2025–26, BIDS formed 113 new SHGs, 7 village organisations and 6 cluster level federations, moved 104 SHGs in Mawlai through stages of bank linkage, and saw INR 95 lakh sanctioned to 28 SHGs in Mawpat. These groups have since registered a Unified Marketing Cooperative Society, bringing 75 SHGs and 6 village organisations onto a single market platform.

Mission Poverty Eradication

Mission Poverty Eradication is a six-year initiative gathering information on, and showcasing, the work of the Salesians of Don Bosco through schools, parishes and livelihood programmes, to help the poor and underprivileged move out of poverty. It covers all 12 provinces of the Salesian South Asia region; within Shillong Province this includes Meghalaya, Tripura, Assam and Mizoram.

STRENGTHENING & QUALITY EDUCATION IN THE LOWER PRIMARY SCHOOLS

SQELPS works to upskill lower primary education (Classes I–V) across two districts of Meghalaya — Eastern West Khasi Hills and East Jaintia Hills — through activity-based learning, improved teaching and learning quality, and reduced repetition and dropout. Baseline monitoring shows school attendance under SQELPS rising from 90.13% to 95.95%.

Technical and Vocational and Educational Training TVET

Our Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme aims to help 10,000 young people across the Northeast — Meghalaya, Tripura and the Barak Valley of Assam — improve their income and future opportunities, with targets of 6,000 in employment, 1,000 self-employed and 500 running their own small business. In 2025–26 alone, the programme reached 1,267 young people: 871 completed vocational training, 154 were placed in jobs and 242 started enterprises of their own, delivered through six supported Don Bosco vocational training centres.
